Inspiration for Developmental Shoot

 This is a photograph by Rankin. I am using these photographs for inspiration as for my next shoot, I am using the doll theme from my last shoot, but to contrast it, instead of shooting negative, dark photographs I am going to focus on happier ideas. I am going to do this by using bright bold colours. I like these photographs as they are colourful and bold. I do like the idea of them having no body and being held, but I don't think I will use it as it gives it a dark edge which for this shoot I do not want.

Work Record November 23rd 2012

Preparation;
For this shoot, I am going to use myself as the subject. I am going to use face paint as I want to create a evil doll sort of effect. I want to do this as I can develop this in a later shoot. This shoot will relate to the formal elements as I want to show form. I got this idea from some of the artists I have been looking at that focus on more gothic ideas. I am going to use the studio as it not add any distractions due to location, and the focus will be clear.

These are some makeup ideas that I am going to use to create my own look.  I like the idea of the cracked effect as it gives it a broken china doll look, which adds to the old, creepy look.  I also really like the bleeding eyes look, as it adds a bit more creepiness, but the tears make it look slightly more innocent in contrast to the dark, evil look.
To prepare I need to;
·         Chose what makeup design I am going to use
·         Set up the camera in the correct position
·         Decide the type of poses and angles I am going to do
What I hope to achieve;
During this shoot I plan to create some photographs showing form and evil/dark emotions and ideas. I am only shooting shoulders up so that the ideas behind this shoot aer shown through facial expression and emotion.

What I actually achieved;
Overall, I am quite happy with how my shoot turned out, especially as it was my first shoot where I used myself as the model. My photographs show form quite well as I created different positions and used different angles. The photographs with the best results are the ones that are closer up as the further away ones show less of the detail on the face, therefore not showing the idea of shoot. I also tried different lighting, having both lights on and turning one off. Not lighting worked particularly better that the others, as it depended on where I was, and what angle i was facing.
Something I decided to do during the shoot was to use props. I decided to experiment with using a doll and some rope. The ideas with the doll mainly worked really well, as It went with the creepy doll idea that I was creating. The rope did not work as well as the doll, as it did not fit in with the idea. Some photographs did not work to good due to composition and lighting.

This is my favourite photograph from the shoot. I like this as I like the position of my head, slightly tilted back and looking straight ahead at the camera as it looks quite creepy. I like how the doll is in it and slightly in front of me. I also like how the doll is hanging from the top, as it helps the eeriness of the photograph. I think that the doll is what makes the photograph, as without it the composition could look a bit empty. When editing this, I made my eyes slightly red, as they are central, making them a focus point, and the red enhances that. I also increased the contrast and slightly de-saturated the colour.

I like this photograph as I like the angle, and the lighting.  I like the angle as I am facing the side, but my head is turning back towards the camera. During this photograph I only had one light on, the left one. Having just one light on meant that there would be more shadow, lighting my face and making my hair dark, blending it into the background, creating shadow. When editing, I just removed the orange and yellow tones in this, and increased the blues to make it look colder. I also made the blood slightly brighter, and the rest of the photo brighter, but without increasing the colour.

I think this photograph is quite good, and simple. I like how it is really close up and straight ahead. During this photograph I had both lights on, so that there would not be any side brighter than the other. I like how even though my head is straight on in front of the camera in the middle, but it is slightly tilted down to the side. When editing I made the purple lips brighter and stronger, as well as making the blood brighter. I also made my hair redder and darker. To make the photo look creepier, I also made my eyes darker, almost black. I did not make them fully black so that they would not lose the shape and tone.
What I am going to do next;
To develop this shoot, I am going to a contrasting one, where I keep with the doll theme and still use myself as the model to keep it mainly the same. But instead of it being dark and creepy, it will be bright and colourful, contrasting this shoot. To do this, I will still use face paints, but not include the blood, cracks or stitches.

Work Record November 19th 2012

Preparation;

I want to look at human form, colour and tone. The colours I want to look at are dark colours. To do this, I want to create and take photographs of a evil looking, dead child. I want to use this idea to show human form, colour and tone as it shows the dark tones and colours I want to look at. I was originally going to use the studio, but I decided that as I used the studio for my last developmental piece, I wanted to shoot on a location. I decided on a church for this, as it keeps within the dark theme for this shoot.

These are some inspirational images that have helped me develop my idea. Although they are not exactly how I want my shoot to be, they have similarities and have given me ideas to develop my shoot. The church is similar to the type of church I want to use for my shoot, as it looks old and is surrounded by trees and gravestones which make it look more eerie. I like the image of the girl as she is blonde, and I want my model to be blonde as it makes her seem more innocent to contrast with the creepiness. I also like the angle of the photo and the position the girl is in.

To prepare I need to;
·         Find a church to use as my location
·         Find someone to be my model
·         Plan what I want them to wear
·         Plan the make up
What I hope to achieve;
During this shoot I plan to take various photographs from different angles and of different poses to show form, tone and colour. This shoot will link to my some artists I have researched as it links to the morbid and gothic style of their work.

What I actually achieved;
 Overall, I am happy with how my shoot turned out, as the location I chose worked really well with the idea, and the model looked exactly how I wanted her too. My photographs showed form and tone, not so much colour, other than the contrast of the white of the dress, the blonde hair, the rose and teddy against the dark background and makeup.  My favourite photographs were where the angle was looking up at the model, as it made her look more significant and eerie. Although I got some good photographs, some came out just black due to lighting; this means that in future if I do a similar shoot I will have to do it a bit earlier in the day.
This shoot went good, and nothing during the shoot, and the location, model, props and makeup worked well and the overall result was good and nothing compromised my shoot. This shoot gave me ideas on how to develop my shoots and expand on my current ideas to link everything. My favourite thing about this shoot, is how nothing in it makes it seem modern, as there is no street lights of anything visible, which I think helps create a old, eerie feel.

This is my favourite photograph from the shoot. I like this as I like how it shows depth due to the model being so far forward, making her look bigger than the church, enhancing  how she is the focus of the shoot. I also like the angle, which is looking up at her, so it shows her looking down, and that along with her position add to the eeriness. When editing, I done three different edits for this, one where I liquefied the background, and kept the colour and darkness consistent, and two like this. The other shows the model slightly darker. I like this one best, as she is brighter, and shows more colour in contrast to the church and background.

I like this photograph as it is closer up and shows her face more. I like how she takes up most of the composition, but there is still some of the location shown which is crucial as it adds to the photograph and without it, the photograph does not feel as creepy. I like how the roses are part of this as well, as they add some life contrasting the dark, dead feel. I like the position of her head, as it shows enough of her face, but her hair covers it slightly making her seem more mysterious. When editing this photograph, I made it slightly darker, and enhanced the contrast. I also made the roses brighter, so that the eye is drawn to them slightly. I did this as without the colour, they would not be as noticeable and would in a way be a bit pointless.

I like this photograph as I think out of all of the photographs this is the creepiest. I think this because the way she is standing holding onto the cross protectively. I think the fact that the cross is very simple and wooden, is what makes it seem to creepy. What also adds to this effect I think is the fact the model looks quite alone, as other than the tree and church in the background there is nothing around her. As in the first photograph, the angle is looking up at her slightly. When editing this, I just made it darker, then brighter.  I wanted to keep this quite simple, without over editing the colour, as I think in its own it is quite an eerie photograph due to just the composition and what is in it.

What I am going to do next;
 When doing this shoot I got the idea to do a contrasting shoot, where I use the same model and a similar idea, but make it happy and bright, which contrasts the eerie, dark theme of this shoot. I am also going to do a contrasting shoot for my previous shoot. I am going to use this as a main theme to run through all of my photographs. So for every shoot I will do another one using the same model and a similar location and idea, but it will have the opposite effect.

Improvements for Development Shoot November 13th

When making my Work Record for my developmental shoot, I noticed that in the photographs of her whole body, her legs look quite short due to the angle I took the photographs at. Although I am going to re do these at some point, I wanted to edit some of the photographs to make her legs appear longer. To do this I selected the area I wanted to make longer, then on Transform, I made them slightly longer. This turned out good, enhancing the length of the legs and it looks natural and realistic and not like they were edited.

Work Record November 13th 2012

Preparation;
 For my first developmental shoot I want to look at human form. To do this, I am planning on taking photographs of my friend who is a ballerina, and therefore can create interesting poses and I can link the photographs back to my research artists. For this, I am going to use the studio, as I want to keep the background plain so that form is shown more, and the light had to be going in the right direction, and angle to show the form.

These are some images I like that I want to try and create photographs similar to. I like how form is shown in both with different poses, with one being the ballerina standing not showing as much form due to the position and light. I like the other one best, as the position is different, and the position shows more tone. I also like how it is in black and white as it makes it look slightly simpler and enhances the form.

 To prepare for this I need to;
 • Ask my friend to pose for me
 • Book in the studio
• Decide what colours I want my friend to wear
• Plan what poses I would like her to create showing good form.

  What I hope to achieve;
On the shoot, I plan to take various photographs, of different positions and areas of the body, such as her face, her whole body, her hands and her feet/legs. This links to my artists, as the ones I have looked at focus on using models and show human form, and different positions. I hope that during this shoot I will get some good, different and varied photographs showing form, and through the ballerina clothing I want to show a form of fashion.

 What I actually achieved;
Overall I am happy with how my shoot turned out, and I got various photographs with different ballet poses showing form, which was my aim. I got full body images, just the feet, and various angles. Out of all the different poses, there was not a specific area of the body, angle or distance that worked best, as I got varied results with some working better than others. Something that I was not planning on including was props, but I ended up trying some out. I used a scarf and a stool. The scarf I did not use much as it did not work very well, but the stool I used quite a bit as it helped create different poses and showed form.
 Although overall I got a good result, and am really happy with how my first developmental shoot turned out, I did get some photographs that did not look as good. This is due to the angle I was taking the images at, which was eye view. The angle and height made her legs look short, whereas I should have taken the photos including her whole body going up at an angle. Although this was a problem, it did only affect the shots of her whole body and some of her legs. Because of this, I am going to at some point go back and re take these photographs, as the idea is good, but the result did not turn out too well.

I like this photograph, as I think it is the only one of her legs where they do not look short in comparison to the rest of her body. I like how it is just her body and her head is cut off, as it makes her legs the focus. I think this photograph is quite bright, and the colours are vivid with the contrast between the blue and the red. When editing, I did not over edit this, other than cropping her head out as I did not want to make this look to edited and false, as it is quite a nice photograph.
I like this photograph as it shows a different position and is closer, rather than showing her in a more stretched out pose. If this was taken at a further distance I don’t think it would look as good. I like this as the position and light creates and shows good form. When editing I changed this to black and white as the photograph looks more enhanced in black and white.
I like this photo as it shows a lot of form, showing a definite direction of light, due to the whole left side being in shadow. I like this as I think the position looks quite natural, and the composition is good with her just off too the right rather than being central. When editing this, I removed the orange tint caused by the light, and just made it slightly darker.

  What I am going to do next;
I am going to go back and take some more photographs to add to this shoot where her legs will look longer. But I also want to develop this and do a contrasting idea. This is quite happy and bright, and to contrast this I would like to do a darker, more gothic idea, where the background would be white, and I will have the model in black and instead of her looking as innocent, make her seem darker using eye makeup. But, for my next shoot I plan on moving away from this idea and trying out something different. I plan on keeping in with the idea of taking photographs of models, but I am going to use a child and make her look gothic and evil, which I got the idea of from my research artists.

Reflection Work Diary 16th October 2012

Evaluation;

In this shoot we had to take photographs showing reflection. This could be any type of reflection that I wanted. I took photographs of various different types of reflection such as; shadow, mirrors, water and people copying each others actions. This has been one of my favourite shoots, as it could be very creative and I got quite a lot of good photographs. My favourite photos and the ones that worked out best were the ones of refection and shadow in puddles. I like these best as I like how the colours look and the composition was good. The photographs that did not work as well as I hoped were the ones where I had two people copying each others actions. Overall, the shoot turned out well, and I am happy with the result.

This is my favourite image from the shoot. I like this best as I think overall it works well, and shows a different type of reflection other than a mirror, as it shows the shadow. My favorite thing about this photograph is the colours, It is very dark and grey, which makes the muddy puddle stand out. I think the colours in this and the amount of shadow create a dark, and slightly gothic feel to the photograph. The composition  is good as the model takes up half of the composition, and the shadow takes up the rest.

I also like this photograph as well. I like this as it is different, and is not reflecting and image of something, but the light is reflected off of the shoes. I think the colour in this is good as well, dark, yet quite vivid. I like the composition in this as the shoes are central, and the rest of the space is simple, just grass. This photograph is not crowded so it is obvious what the focus of this image is. I think this image works well as part of reflection, as it goes against the typical type of reflection and reflects light instead.

Idea Development;

I really enjoyed taking photographs showing relfection, as it could be interpreted any way I wanted, and could be imaginative. I would like to develop on this work, espcially developing the shadow reflection as I think that worked out really well, and could be developed. Especially as the weather is suitable at this time of year, which adds to the feel of the photograph. I would like to take photos in swappy or muddy areas, such as near ditches and on fields.

I like the idea of taking photographs like this one, as I like the eeriee feel to it. I like how the photograph is dark and in shadow, so presumably taken at night. I like there is just a strip of light cutting through the composition where the person is. The shadow is blurred, but you can still make out that is the shadow of a person. Although this is different to what I origonally wanted to do, I like how it looks and fits in with the feel of the shoot I want to do and is similar to my idea and fits in.

I like this photograph as it is quite similar to mine, but the feel is slightly different. I like how is quite a dismal photograph, yet the reflection of the model is quite happy, as it looks as if she is dancing. Although the reflection is a shadow, it does show reflection as well due to the light. I like how you can only see a small part of the models leg, and almost the whole composition is filled with the shadow. The fact that it is in black and white adds to the effect I think, but personally, I would make it slightly darker, and add some brown colours to make it seem more sepia and vintage.
