Preparation;
For my first developmental shoot I want to look at human form. To do this, I am planning on taking photographs of my friend who is a ballerina, and therefore can create interesting poses and I can link the photographs back to my research artists.
For this, I am going to use the studio, as I want to keep the background plain so that form is shown more, and the light had to be going in the right direction, and angle to show the form.
These are some images I like that I want to try and create photographs similar to. I like how form is shown in both with different poses, with one being the ballerina standing not showing as much form due to the position and light. I like the other one best, as the position is different, and the position shows more tone. I also like how it is in black and white as it makes it look slightly simpler and enhances the form.
To prepare for this I need to;
• Ask my friend to pose for me
• Book in the studio
• Decide what colours I want my friend to wear
• Plan what poses I would like her to create showing good form.
What I hope to achieve;
On the shoot, I plan to take various photographs, of different positions and areas of the body, such as her face, her whole body, her hands and her feet/legs.
This links to my artists, as the ones I have looked at focus on using models and show human form, and different positions.
I hope that during this shoot I will get some good, different and varied photographs showing form, and through the ballerina clothing I want to show a form of fashion.
What I actually achieved;
Overall I am happy with how my shoot turned out, and I got various photographs with different ballet poses showing form, which was my aim. I got full body images, just the feet, and various angles. Out of all the different poses, there was not a specific area of the body, angle or distance that worked best, as I got varied results with some working better than others.
Something that I was not planning on including was props, but I ended up trying some out. I used a scarf and a stool. The scarf I did not use much as it did not work very well, but the stool I used quite a bit as it helped create different poses and showed form.
Although overall I got a good result, and am really happy with how my first developmental shoot turned out, I did get some photographs that did not look as good. This is due to the angle I was taking the images at, which was eye view. The angle and height made her legs look short, whereas I should have taken the photos including her whole body going up at an angle. Although this was a problem, it did only affect the shots of her whole body and some of her legs. Because of this, I am going to at some point go back and re take these photographs, as the idea is good, but the result did not turn out too well.
I like this photograph, as I think it is the only one of her legs where they do not look short in comparison to the rest of her body. I like how it is just her body and her head is cut off, as it makes her legs the focus. I think this photograph is quite bright, and the colours are vivid with the contrast between the blue and the red. When editing, I did not over edit this, other than cropping her head out as I did not want to make this look to edited and false, as it is quite a nice photograph.
I like this photograph as it shows a different position and is closer, rather than showing her in a more stretched out pose. If this was taken at a further distance I don’t think it would look as good. I like this as the position and light creates and shows good form. When editing I changed this to black and white as the photograph looks more enhanced in black and white.
I like this photo as it shows a lot of form, showing a definite direction of light, due to the whole left side being in shadow. I like this as I think the position looks quite natural, and the composition is good with her just off too the right rather than being central. When editing this, I removed the orange tint caused by the light, and just made it slightly darker.
What I am going to do next;
I am going to go back and take some more photographs to add to this shoot where her legs will look longer. But I also want to develop this and do a contrasting idea. This is quite happy and bright, and to contrast this I would like to do a darker, more gothic idea, where the background would be white, and I will have the model in black and instead of her looking as innocent, make her seem darker using eye makeup.
But, for my next shoot I plan on moving away from this idea and trying out something different. I plan on keeping in with the idea of taking photographs of models, but I am going to use a child and make her look gothic and evil, which I got the idea of from my research artists.
