Work Record January 24th 2013

What I actually achieved;

I am really happy with how this shoot turned out. I achieved my goals, which were to show form, tone and colour and create a shoot that contrasts to my previous one where I used the same models. Although I did originally want to do this shoot on location in London, I am glad I didn’t. This shoot I think has worked out better than it would have if I used a location rather than the studio. I used the white background as it makes the models stand out more and makes it seem brighter and works best with the smart fashion I am showing.  I did use a prop, which was a small gold frame.  I did not plan this, but decided to see what it would look like in the shoot and it worked really well. During editing these photographs, I mainly desaturated them, but so that they still has some colour. I did this as it works well with what my shoot is showing.

                                                                                  really like this edit as it looks fun and quite natural. I chose these photos as it looks like the model is in front of a mirror, which looks more natural. I got this idea from some of Mario Testino’s work. This image in contrasts my other photographs from this shoot, as it is more fun, whereas the other shoots are in general more serious. Overall I like the composition of these images together, and it looks almost like a collage with no general pattern or specific way in which I laid the photographs out. I also like the high contrast and vivid colours used, which is what makes this stand out and makes it seem more dramatic.

                                                                                                       This is another photograph I really like. I like this one as it is simpler than the others I have taken. I like how it looks quite casual, due to the angle and the way the model has turned his head towards the camera.  I chose to make it black and white as it enhances the classy and dramatic feel to the photograph. For this photograph I only had on one light, which is the one that the model is facing. This helps illuminate his face and create more shadow on the side of his face, emphasizing form and tone. When editing I mainly worked on his eyes, using the dodge tool to make them brighter and lighter, making them stand out while at the same time keeping them quite natural. I also used the dodge tool to enhance the highlights in his hair. I chose to make this photograph quite bright as it makes it seem less heavy and not as harsh. I did try out soft focus on this as well, but it made the photo seem too false and I wanted it to be quite natural.

                                                                                                        This photo is what I done the most editing on, and it is my favourite photograph. I like the composition in this photograph and how he is slightly to the left instead of in the centre.  I also like how he is turned towards the camera rather than straight on. I desaturated this slightly as it shows the colour better and emphasizes the ideas of classier more refined fashion. I experimented with adding the light flares which turned out really well, they fill up some of the composition and add more light and drama to the image without overpowering or covering up the model.

Other than desaturating the image and adding the light flares, I did not over edit this image, as the whole aim of this shoot was to look quite natural and realistic.

What I am going to do next;

As I am really happy with this shoot and the previous one that contrasts this, I am finished with this idea. I do not have any other shoots planned for this unit either, as it is almost finished. What I will try and work on is improving and expanding my editing skills.

Edits January 22nd 2013

Inspiration January 22nd 2013

I like how these images by Mario Testino show different images, and the same image but closer up repeated to fill the composition. I also like the use of tone and colour to make the image more intense and dramatic.
I am going to experiment with this idea using photographs I already have. Once my next shoot is complete I want to put some of those photographs and some of the previous contrasting photographs together. This will hopefully show the contrasts and similarities in the two shoots.

Work Record Preparation January 22nd 2013

Due to the weather, I could not go ahead with my shoot I planned to do on location in Chelsea, London. The aim of the shoot was to do a contrasting one to my grungy shoot, and instead show classier, more polished fashion. I wanted to use a location as it would help expand the idea and the location would reflect and emphasise my ideas.
As I am unable to shoot on the location now, I am instead going to use the studio and keep my ideas and models the same.

This is an photograph from my previous shoot that this next shoot is going to contrast.

Preparation;

As the idea of this shoot is to contrast my previous grungy, edgy fashion shoot, I am going to show a preppier, neater more upper class, classy fashion as this will contrast strongly as they are opposing fashion ideas. For this shoot I am keeping the models the same, and am going to use a white background again. For the previous shoot I used only on light to make it darker and edgier. This time I want to make it look cleaner and brighter so I am going to use both lights.
This shoot will contrast my previous one and show colour and form.

These two photographs show some ideas I have for my shoot, although I could not find any photographs showing my ideas exactly. Both of these photographs by Rankin show some ideas and poses that I am going to look at and develop during my shoot. I like how these are in black and white as it adds to the classy feel of the photographs, although I do plan on using colour for my photographs. I also like the poses shown and the use of the props - umbrella and hat in the right image.

To prepare I need to;

  • Book the studio
  • Plan what I want my models to wear
  • Decide if I want to use props, and what props I want.
I hope to achieve;

During this shoot i hope to achieve a classy, refined shoot that shows form, tone and colour that shows ideas of classy, smart fashion. To achieve this I am going to look at different angles, positions, different close ups and full length photographs.

Project Development

To develop and improve Unit 1 I want to do some more shoots and develop my PhotoShop skills.

The theme with my work in Unit 1 is contrasting ideas, and in showing that I have shot two different ideas in separate shoots, but keeping a similar theme and same models. I did not complete all of my shoots, so my aim is to complete them. To complete this I need to do two shoots to contrast previous ones. I would also like to create another idea as well, revolving around using a location as most of my work has been done in a studio.

This is the first shoot I am going to work on is to contrast the previous shoot in the church yard. I am going to work on this first as I do not yet know what idea the contrasting shoot is going to have and whether it will be a happier shoot or a darker one.

The other shoot I am going to work on is to contrast my last shoot where I focused on a grungy, rough idea. For this shoot I am going to focus on a preppier idea showing the models looking smarter and showing more colour.

This is some inspiration for my shoot;

I would also like to work on my PhotoShop skills so I show my ideas better and create more surreal, realistic looking photographs. I want to work on adding effects and enhancing makeup on the photographs to make it more refined and realistic.

In todays lesson I am going to work on looking at various different Photoshop techniques and trying them out on photographs I have previously taken. I am also going to plan one of my shoots that I need to do in order to complete my ideas.

Work Record December 14th 2012

Preparation;
For this shoot, I am going to do a more realistic shot in contrast to y previous shoots, which have had more unrealistic themes. This time I am going tp be doing more of a grungy, rock fashion shoot. I am also going to be using male models this time instead of female as in my previous shoots. This shoot should show form and tone. I will be doing this shoot in the studio.

Although neither of these photographs show exactly what I want to do for my shoot, they both contain different ideas I am putting into it. The photograph on the left by Viona Ielegems relates due to the rough, grungy feel of it and the way the model looks slightly scruffy. The photo on the right relates as it is in the studio, and I like the idea of the photographs being in black and white, which is something I may do when editing.

To prepare I need to;

·         Get some models

·         Plan what I want them to wear

·         Book the studio

·         Get props
What I hope to achieve;
During this shoot I plan to take photographs showing form and tone and representing grungy/rock fashion. I want to take from different angles and with different amounts of light to show the models and the idea in different ways. I hope from this I can develop it further with a contrasting idea.

What I actually achieved;
During this shoot I managed to get the results I wanted and am happy with how my shoot turned out. My photographs show form, tone and depth. I created the scruffy/grungy/rock fashion shoot with the use of clothes, makeup and props. To enhance the look I used a white background to show the dark colours more. I created different amounts of shadow by experimenting with different amounts of light by having both lights on, and trying with one on from both angles. I don’t have a specific angle or distance which produced better photographs and I have a range of different ones, such as just the models face, and full length.

When editing, I kept the photographs fairly natural, and just touched up some areas, and desaturated and added more contrast to the photographs. I didn’t want to over edit the photographs so they stayed looking realistic.
This is my favourite photograph from the shoot as it is similar to one from a Nirvana shoot where I did get some ideas for this shoot from. I like how this shows depth due to one model being quite close to the camera and the other being further away. I like how the composition is filled well. When editing I made it slightly lighter, but increased the contrast. I also desaturated it, but not so that I lost the colour. I enhanced the green on the focus model, which I think adds to the photograph as it makes it seem more grungy relating to the use of alcohol and cigarettes during the shoot.
I like this photograph as it is looking down on the model slightly making him seem slightly inferior, which is how some people see people dressed like this. I like the way he is looking up at the camera as it makes it seem more personal. The relaxed position he is in makes it seem more natural. This shows tone and form. When editing this photograph I desaturated this completely, and enhanced the contrast so it seems dirtier and slightly older. I also made it slightly blurry which I think goes well as it relates to the hazy look in the models eyes.
I like this photograph as the model looks quite distressed and disorientated. I like how the model fills the composition and is partly cut off. I like how this one is quite natural and the model is not looking at the camera making it seem more off guard shot. When editing this I wanted to keep it natural so I just used curves and levels as I thought the photograph didn’t need over editing. I did make the area around his eyes darker though to enhance the grungy look I was going for.
What I am going to do next;
From this shot I want to develop it and add a contrasting idea using the same models but different idea. I want to create a more posh, Chelsea look to show the complete opposite idea. I would keep the background the same and the models the same as I have in my previous contrasting shoots.

Work Record December 4th 2012

Preparation;
For this shoot, I am going to develop my previous ballet idea by creating a contrasting shoot. For this I am going to use the same model as I did previous to keep it continuous. I am going to change the look though, from innocent to dark. To do this I want to use dark colours and some makeup.

These are some photographs I got inspiration from. I especially like the close up face photograph as I like the makeup and the colour of the eye as it enhances the dark feel. I like the pose and the dark leotard and skirt in the other one. I also like the background, but I am doing my shoot in a studio with a black background so the model is the focus with no distractions.

To prepare I need to;
·         Plan what I want my model to wear
·         Plan makeup ideas
·         Book studio
·         Plan what poses I want my model to do
·         Plan the angles which will show her dark and superior

What I hope to achieve;
During this shoot, I hope to create a dark shoot in contrast to the bright and happy shoot I done previously with similar ideas.

What I actually achieved;
I am quite happy with this shoot, and although some photographs did not turn out as well as I thought I mainly got good results. I took a variety of head shoots and full body ones from different angles and showing various ballet poses. The angles that worked best were looking up at the model as it showed her as more superior. The closer up photographs also worked well as they show more emotion. Instead of using a black background for these photographs I used a blue one so that the black clothing and the models dark hair would stand out. To enhance the dark feel, I got the model to wear black heavy eye makeup and have her hair loose and messy in contrast to how neat I had her look in the previous shoot.

When editing, I kept it relatively simple just enhancing and darkening the colour, increasing the feel and perfecting the photographs.  Overall, these photographs have turned out really well and I am happy with the end result.

I really like this photograph, as it is from a slightly lower angle that the model, but still shows from almost a eye level view. I like how the model is going across the model of the composition and filling it up. I also like how it is quite simple and not over edited. When editing this I kept it quite simple without changing the colours drastically. The only significant thing I done when editing this photograph, I changed the eye colour to black. This makes it more eerie, while seeming realistic due to the fact I kept the colours natural.

 This is most likely my favourite photograph from this shoot due to the angle, composition and editing. The angle is slightly below and the model is looking down at the camera enhancing the dark look. The position puts part of her face into shadow making it darker. But what I most like about this is the editing. I painted over areas in her face to smooth it over and add more shadow and highlight to certain areas. I also enhanced the makeup and changed the colours to slightly greyer and bluer. This helps create a more unnatural, eerie photograph.

What I am going to do next;
As I have now done the contrasting shoot to the previous ballet shoot and am happy with how they have both turned out, I am going to move away from this idea.
During my next shoot I am going to use the studio and do a more grungy, fashion type shoot which is different to the shoots I have previously done.
